March
Skijoring Weekend
The idea for this event was hatched one day by two met conversing over a
table at The Golden Burro. Now this is really fun-Leadville style! Throughout
the winter, the county's Road & Bridge Dept. spends countless man hours removing
snow from Leadville's main thoroughfare, Harrison Ave. only to truck tons
of snow back onto the street for skijoring. In addition to the snow and obstacle
course with water ski-like jumps is created for the racers.
This team event requires two men and a horse. The horse and one human are
the "tow" part of the team. The other human dons a pair of skis and navigates
the course, going airborne off the jumps. This should be an Olympic event!
In any case, it happens every year in March. Contact us for dates.

Heritage Museum

The Carnegie Building is home to the Lake County Civic Center Association's
Heritage Museum and is dedicated to preserving local history. Andrew
Carnegie donated funds to Leadville for the establishment of their first
library. Spearheaded by Mrs. Mary Louise Stickley and the Leadville
Public Library Association, the City of Leadville provided the site
and assumed maintenance for the new building. Opened on January 4, 1904,
it served as the library until 1971. The museum houses a fine collection
of Leadville memorabilia--Victorian furniture, mining and boomtown miscellany,
a scale model of the world's largest Palace of Ice built in Leadville
in 1896, photographs and mementos of the 10th Mountain Division at Camp
Hale and the gallery of fine art and mining dioramas. 60-90 minute visit.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Mining Museum

Once home to Leadville's High School, the building was constructed
at the turn of the century despite a depressed local economy. The building
now serves as home to the museum.
Often called "The Smithsonian of the West," visitors are always impressed
by the detailed dioramas depicting the early days of mining, a walk-through
replica of a hard rock mine, a fabulous collection of minerals and much
more. For more information, visit their web site: www.mininghalloffame.org

The Tabor Home
|
The Tabor Home was built by H. A. W. Tabor about 1877. Originall located
on Harrison Ave. it was moved to its present location at 116 E. 5th
in 1879. Horace and his first wife, Augusta, lived in the house until
1881.
Enchanted by his latest mistress, "Baby Doe," Horace moved to the Windsor
Hotel where she was staying. A national scandal erupted ending in divorce
and Tabor's marriage to "Baby Doe". Horace never regained his prestige
as a result.
Augusta, Leadville's "First Lady," had great courage, super human endurance
and unusual business acumen. A dozen years after the sensational divorce
which broke her heart, she died a millionaire. In that very same year,
Horace A. W. Tabor was bankrupt. 45-60 minute visit.
